Thanksgiving: The 3 to 4 Minute Video

This is my 3-4 minute video.  I filmed Thanksgiving at my house and hoped to make viewers feel and see something more.  If you are an outsider watching someone else's Thanksgiving you see all the work, preparation, and time spent just to sit and eat a meal together.  You eat the meal and just as soon as you're done you have to clean up and part ways instead of staying and sitting and spending time together.  This video is supposed to show the progression and work that goes into such a short meal and then the after effects of the loneliness that ensues when everything is gone.  I also liked that you can see people talking but can't hear what they say which is why I included the slow classical music to also counteract the sped up version of the Thanksgiving preparations. I wanted to make the viewer a third party or an outsider to all that is taking place. Like a window into the lives of a family.

The Walk to Toll

This is my 30 second video that ended up being much longer just because I wanted to play around with different iMovie techniques.  I decided to edit the video to make it seem calm and peaceful on the walkway down to Toll.  This should feel relaxing and you can hear the leaves crunching on the walk down and it seems so nice.  But then walking up the steps the dread of going to classes and labs begins to start.  The movie slows down to feel the impending doom and not wanting to go to a three hour lab.  Then once I get to the door, I am ripped backwards as if none of this is happening and the movie ends at the beginning as if all of this is just a dream...or a nightmare.

Transformation

My transformation is a Christmas tree going from being plain and not lit, to lit and decorated, to once again not lit.  I decided to do a Christmas tree because I love the holiday season and while the hurricane hit my house I was without electricity.  Luckily, our generator was able to provide us with power to our television so my parents and I watched Christmas movies for four days and started the holiday season a bit early this year.  I tried to change the speed of the lights to provide emphasis on important parts especially the beginning and end where the tree is not lit for a longer time.  I also kept the lights on a loop forever because I feel like the Christmas spirit is something that people enjoy all year round and look forward to December and the holiday seasons.

Vector Self Portrait

This is my vector self portrait. I edited a picture of me from when I was in London. The telephone booth tells you where I was and also explains how much I love London and traveling.  The background is a gradient of blue which is my favorite color, while the overlaying print of triangles are supposed to be a modified Aztec print which is my favorite type of print.  I also did the vector shapes of myself differently by creating the shapes then blending them so it was a smooth look rather than separate shapes.  I like the smoother, cleaner look that is more organized and particular. I also feel that a cleaner look is a key component to my style of art that I like to create.

Response to Video/New Media Artists

I personally enjoyed the different video and new media artists.  They were really different and a cool form of art that is such an evolving and up and coming thing.  I really thought the youtube videos that were done by Cory Arcangel of Paganini's 5th Caprice by meshing all the guitar tutorial's single notes into an actual song was genius.  I would have never thought of or been able to dedicate myself to being that meticulous about something of that stature.  That had to have been very difficult and time consuming.  The other youtube video he did of the cats playing a song on the piano was also really creative and funny. I liked that Cory's art is compared to being a DJ.  It shows how revolutionary art has become with technology and the capabilities of combining art with music and other creative forms.  The bowling video games were also creative and really different, though i don't quite understand how that is comparable to an art form. I would think of that more as a computer hacking prank.

Visual Poetry

I did this quote about anxiety and incorporated my anxieties about organic chemistry.  I made the molecules with each letter surrounding it to make it visually interesting and a bit difficult to read.  This difficulty should cause almost an anxiety in readers that incorporates the quote's emotion while reading.  I incorporated pictures from my time abroad into the molecules because they are my favorite places and remind me of a happy and relaxing time.  I also made the font like handwriting as if I was writing this on a piece of paper with the background of the notebook page.
