I did this quote about anxiety and incorporated my anxieties about organic chemistry. I made the molecules with each letter surrounding it to make it visually interesting and a bit difficult to read. This difficulty should cause almost an anxiety in readers that incorporates the quote's emotion while reading. I incorporated pictures from my time abroad into the molecules because they are my favorite places and remind me of a happy and relaxing time. I also made the font like handwriting as if I was writing this on a piece of paper with the background of the notebook page.

I liked the idea. It was visually pleasing and interesting to look at. Something that confuses me is: are you trying to make the piece speak about your anxiety? or about the places that make you happy and relaxed? Did you put the places in to kind of cure your anxiety for organic chemistry? Personally I think by butting happy places in it balances out the piece bringing good with the bad. If you really want to get across the anxiety to your viewer I would take out the happy pictures and replace them with images of other things that make you anxious or unhappy. For me that would really bring it home. Good Job with the hand writing and the notebook however I really like the concept.
ReplyDeleteI agree, this is really interesting to look at. I think all of the ideas you mention in your caption come across in the piece, so I wish you'd left it up to us to do the work, with maybe a title like "chemistry anxiety" or something like that. The images inside the molecules are really fantastic... I found myself wondering if they were representative of the molecules... but I don't remember enough chemistry to answer my own question there. Remember that a little text can do a lot. I could have almost done without the interspersed "handwritten" text... the letters around the molecules give enough to go by. I found myself also wanting to look around and recombine words (molecules) with others to form new texts. I realize the narrative here was intended on your part, though.
ReplyDeleteGreat visual. I like the idea of you incorporating your anxieties about O Chem with parts of the actual subject matter. Shows that it is on your mind. Using images of places that are "happy places" shows a optimistic view. I like the flow of the image and how you use different forms of text, they seem to make a good transition between the compound diagrams.
ReplyDeleteI love how this 'reads' in little dizzying circles around the molecules. That kind of movement really brings home the idea of anxiousness, but at the same time the words are revolving around your happy places.
